The likely portal of entry for Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia refers to the anatomical site through which the pathogen is believed to have entered the bloodstream.

    • Central vascular catheter (including PICC): Infection associated with a central vascular catheter, including peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC).
    • Peripheral vascular catheter (including arterial line): Infection associated with a peripheral vascular catheter, including arterial lines.
    • Other Implanted Vascular Device (pacemaker, stent, graft, etc.): Infection associated with other implanted vascular devices such as pacemakers, stents, or grafts.
  3. Other/Unknown; includes:
    • Respiratory: Includes ventilator-associated pneumonia, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and community-acquired pneumonia.
    • Genito-Urinary Tract: Infections related to per-urethral or supra-pubic urinary catheters, or recent urological or gynaecological/obstetric surgery within one week of bacteremia.
    • Other Portal of Entry: Any other known portal of entry not specified above.
    • Unknown: No probable portal could be determined based on available evidence.
